Capping it all off are two covers of Senegal’s remarkable Orchestra Baobab: their salsa Senegalaise classic “Nijaay” and “Keten Ati Leen,” a unique Baobab take on Afro-funk that’s one of the most remarkable songs in that legendary band’s catalog. On this album, not only do you get Afrobeat (“Bibinay” and “Serve & Protect”) – there’s roots reggae (“Jericho,” “Kingpin”), a Latin salsa-funk hybrid in the manner of Grupo Fantasma (“Ya Basta”), a swinging Carlinhos Brown-influenced Brazilian track (“Cartão Postal”), a fabulous Budos Band soundalike (“Conquering Lion”), and even some French Caribbean biguine (“Tanbou Lou”). Souljazz’s earliest recordings emphasized their take on Afrobeat since then, the band’s musical horizons have continuously expanded. Their Rising Sun album was one of my favorites of 2010 – believe it or not, this one is even better. Maybe find the real thing.Now in their tenth year together, Ottawa’s Souljazz Orchestra’s fifth full-length cements them as one of the finest Afro-Latin-Caribbean ensembles anywhere in the world. But while the mimicry here is excellent, I have a hard time seeing that the Souljazz Orchestra is bringing anything new to the table. The tunes themselves are catchy and make you want to dance enough to quiet a lot of the concerns. Listening to it made me wonder if this kind of mimicry is justified: I can’t overstate the degree to which this album feels authentic, and authentically old. This is incredibly infectious music, moving from culture to culture but keeping the party going. “Cartão Postal” could be coming out of a soundsystem in a Rio favela. Opener “Bibinay” and “Ya Basta” swing with a Latin sound, “Jericho” and “Kingpin” move things to the islands. They expanded their audience significantly with the Fela Kuti-inspired 2006 single 'Mista President' and have. The instrumental track Sahar, is a piece written for Santour (Persian Hammered Dulcimer) and the Turkish Djumbush. This isn’t the Fela-fetishism of Antibalas, but a more global survey of sounds that use a lot of horns, a lot of bass and an incredibly infectious, funky beat. A high-energy multicultural collective from Ottawa, Ontario, the Souljazz Orchestra fuse vintage African, Latin, Caribbean, British, and American sounds, from Afro-beat and zouk to funk and ska.
